The thymus gland is located in the upper chest cavity just below the collar bones. The gland can be located by placing a finger in the depression between the collar bones. Move your finger down for about two (2) inches and you will feel an elevation in the bone at the top of the rib cage. The thymus occupies an area about 1/2 inch wide by 2 inches long beneath this elevation and it weighs around an ounce. The thymus gland is part of two bodily systems; the endocrine system and the lymphatic system. The gland varies in size and development with the age of the individual. It grows very rapidly until the end of the second year of life. Then the growth is slower until the age of puberty. Following this the thymus begins to decrease in size and becomes dormant as we approach old age. The main purpose of the thymus is to produce specialized lymphocytes called T-cells. These cells are related to the body's defense against infections and are a vital part of our immune system.
In addition, the thymus produces a hormone called thymosin, which also plays an important role in the development and functioning of our body's immune system. In Sweden, in 1987, a physician named Dr. Erik Euby, along with Professor Goesta Wollin, developed a treatment for cancer that, in their practice, proved to be about 90% effective in ridding their patients of the dreaded disease. They would place the south pole of a strong magnet over the thymus area and have the patients wear it continuously for several months. This apparently had a stimulative effect on the thymus and improved their immune system. With today's stressful living habits, perhaps we might benefit from wearing the south pole of a magnet over our thymus just to try improving our immune systems.
